Documentation of Snakes and Ladders (resolved practice)

The process of developing Pandemic Snakes and Ladders has allowed me to develop my specialist knowledge and through the application of this knowledge I have been able to fulfill my visions. This artwork combines the different areas of my practice and showcases my practice. News headlines, participation and play, sculptural/installation work and political commentary are all demonstrated within this piece.

By bringing my practice together into one resolved artwork I have also been able to assess my position within art theory and art movements. I have found my place as a conceptual, participatory artist inspired by movements such as Dadaism, Fluxus, Activist Art and Documentary Art.

The process of making this piece has been about finding solutions for my ideas and visions. I have had to make many decisions about what materials to use and how to best articulate my message. I have independently selected particular dates and placements of the snakes and ladders to make my work coherent and professional.

Planning ahead has been really important to allow myself time to execute this work in the best possible way. Many of the processes were reliant on other parts being complete. For example, I had to complete the preparation of the wood before I started sticking the vinyl and this all took forward planning, particularly when all resources at university had to be booked. I also had to make authoritative decisions. I wanted to continue to change the board as time was moving. However, I needed to have all the designs ready to allow time to stick all 100 pieces of vinyl and finalise the piece. I made the decision to use the dates set out on the Government's roadmap plan for the easing of lockdown to give myself the time needed.

Communication is a really important part of this piece. I had to communicate my message in a way that was quite simple and less likely to be misunderstood. This is why I chose to use the text of news headlines as it is familiar and by nature easily understood.
