Pandemic Snakes and Ladders development
In response to the way the UK Governments have responded to the Covid-19 pandemic I have created a Pandemic Snakes and Ladders. This piece combines two recurring themes within my practice; the act of play, and the use of news headlines and language used to discuss current affairs.
The aim of the game is, as in a traditional game of Snakes and Ladders, to get to the final square – in this case, this represents the end of the pandemic. Ladders are events that should help to lower the R-rate and hopefully bring us closer to the end of the pandemic while snakes are events that have allowed the virus’s spread or pushed us further away to the end of the pandemic. The players progress through the game landing on important dates as they go. Landing on a ladder will progress the player's position on the board, and nearer to the ‘present day’ but a snake will take the player back in time and back in terms of the life of the pandemic.
The interactive element of this game will become a performance as players are forced to move back and forth.
