Courtney Spooner, a second year photography student, has ask me to collaborate with her as she is unable to continue with her project the way she would have done. Courtney has been making work about her Grandads memories of Norwich and researching the places he remembers. As she is no longer able to go out and photograph the places she was making work about she has asked me to draw archival images of these places. Courtney is also collaborating with Sid Gurang who is putting her ideas, text and images along with my drawings into a book about Courtney's Grandad and the memories they share.
She has shared some images that she has found online and given be a brief to recreate them in a line drawing style.
I started this by drawing them with neat straight lines, trying to get the scale correct. However she wanted them to be a lot rougher and more sketching.
I have found this way of working really interesting and it has allowed me to work on my drawing. Working to a brief doesn't usually suit me however I have enjoyed working in a way that is much more free and hasn't relied on me making decisions over how the work is made.
I have found this project really interesting as it feels quite similar to my work about my own Grandad and the stories he tells about working at Jarrolds print factory.
