As I am planning on including my piece, Build Your Own: AK-47!, in the exhibition at Fairhurst gallery I have had to consider a range of ways that I can display this piece. Originally this piece was put together with Velcro that I stuck to the fabric with hot glue. The reason for this is so that I can be played with. However, the size of the gun is too small so the Velcro and glue appears messy and not developed to a high enough standard fir a professional gallery. Because of this I have picked the Velcro and glue off and am experimenting with different ways to lay out the pieces. Firstly, by placing the gun on the play mat I think I can enhance the colours as well as frame the piece so that it doesn't get lost in a large space. I will fix the mat to the wall and fix the pieces to the mat so that it is just a visual piece and not interactive. The reasons I don't want this piece to be interactive are because I will also be including my Build Your Own: AK-47 MEGA! piece which will be interactive and because the pieces are quite small which could result in some parts being lost.
Secondly, the simplest thing to do would be to fix the pieces to the mat tightly together to make the shape of the AK-47. However, I think the context of the piece can be enhances by placing the pieces apart or in a way that only suggests the image of a gun.
I think the best way to fix these pieces to the mat will be to use Velcro, however I need to experiment to find what is the best option.
